Tallow FAQ

What Is Tallow?

Put simply, tallow is the rendered fat (suet) from ruminant animals such as cattle and sheep. It has been used since ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece as a prized skincare ingredient in beauty rituals for its luxurious feel on the skin, and therapeutic uses.

The term 'tallow' comes from Latin and means 'sebum' because tallow is bio-compatible with the natural oils our skin produces.  In fact, what makes tallow so powerful is it balances the skin's natural oil production making it incredibly versatile for both oily and dry skin.

Tallow was once widely used for cooking and skincare, but mass production led big corporations to replace it with cheaper, overprocessed plant oils and synthetics for profit, abandoning the time-tested benefits of natural ingredients.

Many companies now use ingredients including parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrances, and petroleum based chemical products which can be harmful, potentially containing toxic and carcinogenic substances.

What Are Its Benefits?

Tallow is deeply nourishing, moisturizing and with exceptionally effective skin barrier healing capabilities.   It is absolutely the best thing you can put on your skin! Read on...

Tallow is tolerated by persons with very sensitive skin, and by those that are prone to breakouts. It's non-comedogenic -  unlikely to clog your pores.   In fact, because tallow helps regulate sebum production and it's high in anti-inflammatories, it can help decrease the occurrence and severity of acne breakouts with regular use.

Fatty Acid Profile: Tallow contains a group of fatty acids that make it so incredibly good for skin and sets it apart from other oils. This combination is not found in any plant sources.

  • conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) - very high source
  • palmitoleic acid (omega 7), palmitic acid
  • alpha-linoleic acid (omega-3)
  • linoleic acid (omega-6)
  • oleic acid (omega-9)
  • stearic acid.

Some of the benefits of these fatty acids in tallow are:

Anti-inflammatory:   Helps reduce inflammation, beneficial for inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

Antioxidant:   Helps protect the skin from free radical damage, which can contribute to premature aging.

Moisturizing effects:  Renowned for its ability to closely mimic the skin's natural oils, tallow balances the skin's natural oil production between oiliness and dryness, promoting a healthy and radiant complexion.

Wound healing:  Aids in the wound healing process, promoting the repair of damaged skin.

Skin Barrier Protection:  Acts as an emollient barrier that helps prevent water loss and protects the skin from environmental stressors such as pollutants, microbes, and UV radiation.

How Long Does Tallow Last?

Tallow will last at room temperature for 12 months, as long as there is no water introduced (with wet fingers), and kept out of direct heat, humidity and sunlight. Always place the cap back on the jar. However, we recommend to use it up within 6 months from purchase in order to ensure optimal quality.

Will I Smell Like Beef?

Absolutely not! Our tallow is truly premium quality and on its own has a very subtle, natural buttery scent which is absent when blended into skincare as other oils or botanical infusions are incorporated.
